2x4 Skis

2 Groups of 5-10
Prepare a four 2x4's, (or larger if possible), with ropes at each end by drilling through the wood and pushing the rope through and knotting it. Have each group stand on a set of the 'skis' (Pack as many teens together as possible). Then they have to race about 100'. This is another good problem solving puzzle. (They have to yell 'RIGHT' - 'LEFT' - 'RIGHT' and so on).

60, 30, 10, 5

Have two volunteers to begin this game. have the others decide on a scene that the two volunteers will act out, such as "a marriage proposal" or "recieving a grammy award". the first time tthe volunteers have 60 seconds to act out the scene, then 30 seconds, then 10 seconds, then 5 seconds. it can get really hilarious!

A What?

*this is a complicated exercise and therefore complicated to explain

1. Have the students sit in a circle on the floor. The instructor will sit within the circle and before him will be many small objects.

2. He will pick up an object, a pencil for example, and while passing it to the person at his right, he will say "This is a pencil" The person will answer, "A What?" The instructor will answer "A pencil", and again the person will ask "A what?" and the instructor will again answer "A pencil." The person will answer "Oh, a pencil." The person than turns to her right and the process continues; "This is a pencil", "A what?" "A pencil" "A what?" "A pencil" "Oh, a pencil!"

3. Practice this once so everyone can follow the pattern. Then start again, this time continually adding in objects so each person is carrying on two conversations at once. One person will say to the person on his right, "This is a pencil", then turning to his left he'll ask "A what?" and continues, passing on the next object.

4. Try to get the objects clear around the circle.

Ameba

Form a circle and have everyone hold hands, put a chair in the middle of the circle. The object of the game is to try and have people touch the chair, by pulling, pushing, etc, but the circular link can not be broken. If you to touch the chair you're out of the game, if the link breaks, the two people who broke the link are out of the game. The game is over when there is only one person left.

Angle Ball

Break group into two teams. At either end of a room place one of the 10 foot poles with a volleyball balanced on top of it (works best if placed in a corner). Mark off an area around the pole that is off limits using cones or another marker (10-15 feet is a good distance). No youth is allowed into this area. Decide who will get the play ball first via flipping a coin or a jumpball.
The object of the game is to knock the balanced ball off of the pole without hitting the pole. Youth may dribble the ball as in basketball, pass the ball, or take three steps with the ball if they are not dribbling. If a shot is taken at the ball on the pole and the pole is hit the team shooting is "polarized". The ball is replaced on the pole and the game resumes with the opposing team getting the ball. If a ball is shot and stays in the "off limits" area the opposing team gets the ball. Also if anyone steps in the off limits area, the opposing team gets the ball.

**Be sure there is nothing breakable behind the pole, many shots may be taken after a rebound off of the wall behind the pole, and depending on the players they are often hard throws
.

Animal Sounds (Ice Breaker)

As the kids walk in hand them a folded piece of paper with the name of an animal on it (the amount of names, and the number of pieces with the same name depends on number of teams, and how large you want the teams to be), tell them not to look until you say to. When everyone has arrived put them into a boundary (if your in a gym, use the lines on the floor, if your on a field, use something VERY visible to show your boundaries). Tell the kids that they can't step out of the boundaries. Now, tell them that each piece of paper holds a name of an animal and that there are so many other people with the same name. Tell them that they have to act out sounds and actions that would tell other team members that they are part of their team, they are not allowed to speak any words, only noises. Tell them to unfold their papers and go to it. (Never have I ever heard my kids be so loud and laugh so much!!!!)

Another Shoe Game

Everybody takes of a shoe from one side (lets say right side) and throw that shoe in a pile. Then everybody grab (at random) a shoe from the pile and put in on. Now the aim is to pair up the shoes. Each person must find the people who are wearing the same shoes as he/she is, and stand such that the pair of shoes are together. E.g. I'm wearing my shoe A and somebody's shoe G, I must find the person who is wearing the other shoe A, and stand so that that pair of shoes are together (AA), and I must find someone wearing shoe G, and put my shoe G with his/her shoe G. Both shoes A and shoes G should be together in space and time (i.e. the object is to form a sort of a line or 'twister' kind of formation where all the shoes have been paired up.)

Baby Food Roulette

Get six volunteers (works better if you don't tell them what they are in for). Have the jars of baby food in a sack or box so the players can't see them. Have them stand in a circle and pass a spoon while music plays (like hot potato). When the music stops, have the loser blindly pick out a jar of baby food and take a big bite. The grosser the flavor the better. Continue until there is only one person left in the game. Works well at large group events.

Bacon

You break everyone off into pairs, making sure that they are evenly matched size and gender. Put the young people into two lines facing each other. Number the teens 1 to how many you have on each line. Example: Suzy and Jackie are #1. Suzy, in corolation to the ball, is on the far left side of her line. Jackie is on the right side kitty corner to Suzy.
When you begin play, call out the
number(s) and tell the teens to wrestle the ball to their side. Example: #1 is called out and Suzy and Jackie run to the ball. They are to fight to get the ball to their side. The ball has to be in Suzy's hands for Suzy's team to score or Jackies hands for her team to score.

Bad Ball Bowling

This is a great game for all those who whine that they are no good at bowling. You break your group into a few teams, no more than 4 kids per group. The object of the game is to get the worst score possible. (That is the lowest score.) You think it's easy, don't you. There's a catch… gutter balls count as strikes. You would be surprised that once the pressures off that all of your kids suddenly go pro.

Balloon Dress Up

Get 2 volunteers (you can use more than 2 people if you have enought sets of clothes). The object of the game is to get dressed in the clothing while keeping a blown up balloon in the air at all times. Make sure that the two people have similar items of clothing - for example, a shirt, hat, socks, gloves, sunglasses and a coat. The winner is the first person to get competley dressed without letting the balloon touch the ground.

Banana Hose

Divide the teens into pairs

Give them one banana and half a pair of panty hose (i.e. one leg of nylon)

One puts the panty hose over their head

The other feeds the banana to them through the panty hose

The first team to finish the banana wins

[HINT: slowly works better as you have to strain the banana through the panty hose]

Banana Rumble

Give everyone a banana. Everyone puts a mark on their banana to be able to identify their's. All the bananas are put in the middle of the room in a big pile. Everyone is in chairs in a square around the room around the pile. Be sure to be in a square shape because each side of the square is a team...4 sides--4 groups.
When a signal is given, everyone rushes to find their banana. The team that has their bananas and is sitting down first wins. [Doing this game several times is likely to get a few squished bananas out of it so make sure you have quite a few extras.]

Banana Tag

Divide up into two teams. Sit in parallel lines across from each other. Make sure the 2 lines are about 15 feet apart. Put a banana in the middle. Number the people off.
One line: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9...
Other line: 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1...
So that the same numbered people are diagonal from each other.
The leader will call out a number. The two people with that number run up to the banana. The object is for one of the people to get the banana and get back to his/her seat without being tagged by the other person. [This is very hard, since both people are standing right next to each other.]
Once one of the players picks up the banana the other player can tag him/her. If a person is tagged, the banana must be put down and another number called. Whoever tags earns a point for the team. Whoever gets to his/her seat without being tagged earns a point for his/her team.

Barnyard Game

There are several ways of doing this. Either in the dark or in a lighted room. Dark is a lot more fun, but you need to make sure none of the adults are playing (because of liability and Harassment). It does work well in a lighted room too. While the 'kids' (Term used loosely - since most of the people reading this would probably consider me a kid at 20) are coming into the room assign them animals (i.e.: Donkey, Chicken, Horse, Elephant - get creative). Tell them not to tell anyone what animal they are. They have to find everyone else with the same animal that they have. They do this by making the animal sounds (They may NOT talk). Give them a while, and when it seems like they've all found their groups, let them stop. You can also play other games with they groups they've made. They can do some mixers in the small groups - get to know each other.
NOTE: You can have each group hold hands once they've found their group - Jr. Hi Usually Loves the idea, and High School usually doesn't really care.
