The Purpose Behind "Quiet Time"

The purpose in writing "Quiet Time Volume 1" had some clear intentionality and research behind it. The research and testing done before writing this book made me quite certain that students needed a new type of devotional book. They needed a book that fit their personalities and desires, along with their busy lives. It was this which inspired the creation of "Quiet Time Volume 1"

As a youth pastor myself, I began to search through bookstores for Devotionals that were geared towards Jr./Sr. High age youth. I was able to find numerous 30-day devotionals, quiet a few 60-day devotionals, and even a few 120-day devotionals. What seemed to be absent were any full-year devotionals that were specifically geared towards Jr./Sr. High students. The few devotionals I found for an entire year were inspirational types of stories and did not require any effort on the side of students. And any of the devotionals that I found for Jr./Sr. High students had the exact same structure for every single day's study.

Working with youth, I knew for a fact that their attention span was too short, and their need for variety was too high for any of them to diligently finish a devotional with such little variety. I also knew that they wanted to have something that they could write in and see some spiritual development throughout the year. They needed something that was geared for the, but not watered down. They needed variety and substance. This spawned the writing of "Quiet Time Volume 1."

"Quiet Time Volume 1" is a one-year devotional diary where students not simply read a devotional, but respond in writing in a variety of ways. It includes 17 different studies done in 10 different styles. The different types of study are designed to meet the variety of interests that students have. The studies include: fill in the blank answers, response paragraphs, inductive Bible studies, illustrating a passage through drawing, and even writing response advice letters. It is also set up in such a way that a student is not required to go in sequential order from page 1 to the end. It allows for consistent study through a book of the Bible such as Ephesians, and allows for individual days of reflection through a book such as Psalms.

This book has been self-published for over 3 years now and has been made available to individuals and youth groups throughout that time. Some youth groups which have bought it have used it in a variety of ways, from their "New Believers" youth class to being the required devotional for their "Student Leadership Team."

This book was written for students and was written with great intentionality to serve the needs as well as the desires of Jr./Sr. High students in a devotional book.
